Hi all, am new to audophilia (nothing implied here

)... have bought the 250 ohm version of the Dt770's as it was on the cheap. Not here yet but i know i will need an amp to power this. Used solely for gaming and the odd bit of rap/hip-hop, and is on an Asus Xonar D2x soundcard if tht helps.

Comlpetely new to the world of amps and surprised at the price of these things...cost several times more than wat i paid for the headphones ($100) in many cases

Anyway, i need help on what amp to get....it needs to be reeealy cheap. cant go more than $100 as GBP exchange rate is currently horrendous... and im eating into school money as it is.....

Any suggestions on what i can get, dont mind if its second hand...maybe if you can point me to some second hand ones on head-fi or on ebay if you know of any? (intl postage tho

Check out the Little Dot I. It is 109 dollars and many report that it has good build quality and its a very good amp for the price. It should be exactly what you are looking for. You will need a RCA to Mini cable thought to connect your computer to the amp. These can be bought for 5 dollars from Radioshack.

At about £80, the DARKVOICE FIGARO would have been perfect, but thanks to the ridulous exchange rates, the price has jumped up. You could try for a second hand one on E-Bay, a mint condition one is being auctioned there a the minute. Another option would be the Xiansheng 708B.

Excellent, thnks Godkin nd sentinl for you suggestions.. i shall have a look at these amps, the little dot seems to fit the bill but slightly high price new... i shall have a hunt for a 2nd hand 1

Its a good price but from other reviews it seems to harshen the tone too much... if like to keep the slightly loose bass of the dt770 even if the amp tightens it up

also seems to do a lot better with senns than beyer cans

I've got a G&W J1.
A pal of mine brought back from Shanghai for £55 from a headphone specialist shop.

I modded it with better caps, sig wire and the biggest improvement, Hexfred fast reacting diode on the power supply instead of the dime a dozen diode that were there.
It was good before now it's great - Power supply is so important in getting good timing and tight pumping bass into the equation.
I compared it with a Graham Slee solo over a weekend. The Slee went back.
Very little in it really.

My J1 runs rings around my Little Dot 2+.

Even in standard form for sensible money I would say go for it.

thnks for the info steve.... i will look into it and see if anone has got 1 going second hand... what sort of power supply would i need?... cant afford anything too expensive...headphone amp is already going over budget lol

I think Steve means modding the existing power supply of the G&W: better caps, diodes etc. Modding is certainly a good way to go. It turned my very ordinary X-CAN V3 into a very good amp indeed.

I would avoid Tube amps for all-around amplification. Cheap tubeamps have a nice warm flavor for music, but gaming, for example, is just a waste of tubes lifetime. They only last several thousand hours afterall before soundquality starts to decrease and finally they stop functioning.

Looking for cheap SS amps would be wiser.

For example, there is new Creek OBH11 available in ebay for 118£. Not the greatest amplifier out there, but good for the money. And AFAIK you can improve it later by adding better quality compatible Elpac powersupply.
