I want to build a dedicated listening setup for my music and I wanted some guidance as to what would make a good setup. I will list some parameters which might help as to what I should do.

Currently all my music resides on an External HD.

I will be purchasing a LD MK III or IV in the next few months.

I will also be purchasing an HD650.

Let me know what would make for a kickass home rig.

still a computer, and afaik both of those will require a connection to a network in order to stream data

in other words, buying more components to accomplish the same thing you already had

why?

I did not want to sit in front of my computer when I want to listen. The Squeezebox can pick up the stream from my computer.

why not just go with the "long cable and external amplifier" approach? perhaps a remote? squeezebox is fairly expensive (or am I thinking of transporter?

The Transporter is the more expensive of the two if that's what you're thinking.

When he said he didn't want to use the computer I thought he meant "at all"

If you have a macbook, get an iphone. Get the free apple remote app. It works through wi-fi, no sitting in front of your computer. Full access to all playlists, add delete, and works from another room in the house. I would think about a decent dac though.

I'm thinking of a 19" wide device thats like $2000 -> why I'm saying this is a waste of cash

eh, you're still "using the computer", so thats where I was lost, theres really no way to just "magic the music from the HD", but a streaming device seems to be his solution, so if it works, thats good

An external dac to go with the squeezebox would help a lot as well.

You're actually wrong . . . few ways to do this . . . for example:

HD Mediabox

TVIX

Netgear EVA8000

Blackbird

Olive Melody (I think, contact them)

Team up with a nice DAC and you're all set.

I was making a list for him and was like "COME ON!" at the screen a few times after he was all like "yeah, Squeezebox!"

. You can also use a Airport with USB sharing and stream from that too.

Plenty of devices support external HDD's, get with the times man!
