The Linksys and the airport express are both wireless routers

Have you had any luck accessing the Airport express through the admin utility I mentioned above? Also, Nomad explains how to activate the Zero config in his first reply - But the Linksys could add some probs there. Sorry, as I'm not a pro, I can't really walk you through the setup as well as I'd like to, I just know enough to keep a wlan working and secure if I can get to it physically...

p.s. also... the amber flashing means that the airport is not having any luck accessing the internet, and it shouldn't have at the moment.

Tried that, now my PC won't recognise it at all whether wired or wireless!

Tried that but unfortunately on my PC the box "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" isn't there.

I think I'm going to have to get someone in for this!

It's not there at all, in the second tab, or it's greyed out?

I think the core problem here is that you're setting up three things simultaneously, and none of them has particularly good compatibility. my advice is: remove all the stuff you have installed for the airport, the linksys router and the usb stick. First, check out what is the minimun necessary driver software for the stick, and install _only_ that. Ignore the linksys router for now (ie, keep it shut off, and out of the chain). Then open up the wireless config and see if you can enable the Zero config there. Then attempt the airport setup.

/N

EDIT: Err. Also try disabling your wired network by right-clicking and disconnecting it for the setup. I think that's one possible conflict there. (If you can't turn it back on for whatever reason, don't shoot me, though!)

It's not there at all. A Google search brings up this page http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q313242 which is way beyond me but I note the comment "If you can view the properties of the Wireless Connection icon but you do not see the Wireless Networks tab, the network adapter driver does not fully support the Wireless Zero Configuration service."

Oof. Bad luck. I'm sure it's doable even with the external config (in fact, I have no idea why the APX setup insists on it). And I have no idea how you should proceed, apart from trying to set up a wireless link between the computer and Linksys router, to make sure that everything is working as it should, and after that try to make a connection to the APX...

Bad luck, really, I remember my setup being a 3-4 minute affair back when I got mine.

What you are trying to do is possible. I am not entirely sure of the sequence, but this should be close:

Unplug the computer from the router.

Connect the computer to the AE via ethernet cable.

Run airport admin utility.

You should see your new AE.

Select it from the list, and click the configure button.

If that works, select the Airport tab. You can give the AE a name if you like. There is an option here to join an existing network. It will need some details of your router (network name). This will put the AE in client mode, and you will be able to see it while plugged into the Linksys.

See if you can get to this point (the configure screen) then we can hash out the details.

Oh. My. God. It's working, yet I know not why!

I'm just using the Linksys router and Airport Express. The USB adapter is proving itself to be not needed. I just clicked randomly in a final fit of frustration and the green light came on, and stayed on. One minor - but likely to become quite major issue is I can't get it to print. Although it's plugged into the USB, it just shows printer as "off line".

Thanks for everyone's help, it is way above and beyond what anyone could reasonably wish for, it is sincerely most appreciated.

Hi,

Glad to see it's working now! Sorry I couldn't post until now. I probably did appear online (as I always do, as I always keep some head-fi explorer windows opened even while I'm not browsing) but I was at work until now (sad, I know).

I never used the printer with AX so I really can't help you much there. There should be a printer driver installed when you run the AX soft, I suppose.

Again, excuse the delay. Cheers.

No need to apologise! Really appreciate the help.
I've noticed a number of people on the Apple help forums with similar issues regarding printing that they just don't seem to be able to resolve.

You are welcomed. Good luck with it. Glad to see there were people jumping in the issue too.

Setting up the printing on a PC is definitely non-trivial and involves doing some tweaking in the printer software. (Some of my the things to click might not be called what I'm saying here, since I'm on a non-English XP). I wouldn't do it until you're more comfortable with the APX, and can confirm that stuff like audio streaming is working. Also remember to turn off the wireless networks you're not using so nobody can use your internet connection for bad things(tm)!.

First, you can try the advice at:

http://www.felixgp.force9.co.uk/tech/1004.html

It didn't work for me, since I couldn't get my printer on the list! Here's what I did:
You need to first install the printer software, as for usb (I'm assuming you have) and figure out what's the IP address for the APX (and I believe it needs to be a static address, which it probably isn't if it's working automagically). Then you need to go to the printer setup in the Control Panel. Right click on the printer, open it, hit the "ports" tab, then add an a new port of the "Standard TCP/IP port" variety.

Then, go to:

http://www.felixgp.force9.co.uk/tech/1004.html

And follow the instructions there from "The "Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard" will pop up."

This is where you need to know the static IP for the APX, though.

When you click Finish in the port setup, you should try printing a test page from a document.

Took a while to figure that out, but I actually had a lot of fun tweaking that since the inital setup was so smooth for me and it's more like a logic puzzle

Good luck with you APXing!
