All,

I read tons of stuff about these three option I can not decide. I know they are very good value for the price, but I must admit that k712 looks fantastic. I love the design and colors. (Not a good criteria to choose a headphone - I know).
I Have some concerns about every option. Here they are:

K712 - It has a different sound signature compared to k70x, which is a good thing as I saw some frequency reponse chart and I really like the extra bass (+3DB). But I read a lot people saying the 712 is just a 702 with different pads.
Really. is it only the pads? No other difference? Same Drivers?

DT880 (250 ohms) - I am afraid it will lack on Bass. Comparing the three on Headroom, the curve on low/mid-low frequencies for DT 880 is way below the other two.

DT990 (250 ohms) - Nice price. Looks comfortable. But I read lot of complain that Treble can get harsh on them...

I will be driving them with Schiit Magni/Modi. My main purpose is home usage to listen to music. Mainly Classic Rock, Metal, Pop. Indie and sometimes EDM. In another words, very different type of Genres.

Please, your advise will be very welcome.

Thanks,

So you are giving up on your other plan?
Have know idea about the 702 and 712’s but they both have the same impedance and frequency range so might be the same drivers just don’t know for sure. Haven’t had both at one setting but have heard both and I do like them but bass monsters they are not but I think do have adequate bass depends on how much you want.

I have the 712 , xb1000 , cd900 ,qc20/15 , hf5 , hd595 and like the 712 best
I think they require an amp to sound better
My amps are Teac a-h01 and Audio Technica at-ha20

I have listened to the 701 but prefer the 712

The 712 has good balance and width and dry

Hi Buke9,

First of all, many thanks for your time and inputs.

My ears and Brain are "infected" by how nowadays music are. Need to reset and "Educate" them properly. I think k712 will have the adequate bass I am looking for. (Mixing threads: For massive bass I am considering the M100's or the M50x's)

I am not giving up, just an update. My brother is at Germany and I could find better prices for DT´s and AKG there. Much better actually.
Also after some reading here I have added the k712 on the flat sound list and the DT990 as well (I Know this Can are more V shape).

This is the updated short plan:
1. Flat sound - I really want to experience the sound details and soundstage. Listening at home- Relaxing: K712 / DT880 / DT 990 (V Shape sound)
2. Sound Isolation - V Signature: M50X or DT770 80ohm
3. Mobility and Pop/EDM music- Crossfade M100 or M50x.

Thanks,

Do you know what are the diferences on 702 and 712?
I do have a temp solution for amp to drive them (SoundCraft console mixer) 300mw at 150ohms.

The 712’ and 702’s are both 62 ohms and both have and have a max input of 200mw so your mixer should power them fine with 300mw at 150 ohms.

I'd choose K712 out of those 3, but I don't think they're worth $499 :\

Oh, looks like you can get them for $376 instead. ^ ^

Hello,

AKG K702 with the very expensive K712 earpads (96EUR) measures pretty much the same as K712. I've owned both side by side and swapt pads multiple times.
No one but AKG can say they are 100% equal beside the earpads, but they are pretty much the same (at least 95% the same). As far as I've read, drivers used for recent K701/K702/K712 are the same.
Not a bad thing really since both are very good headphones with different pros and cons. Most people prefer the K712 because it's a much better all rounder. Warmer and easier on the ears.
AKG K702 is more of a tool just like K701.

K712 is warmer and more vocal oriented than DT880
DT880 is a relatively cool and slightly bright headphone, similar to HD800 in terms of sound signature. Not particularly fun unless you like that kind of sound and pair them with very high quality recordings.
DT990 is just a tad more coloured than the others in this list and yes, the treble is on the very bright camp. It's v-shaped but not sub-bassy or particularly warm. It's mid-bassy and bright, with smooth upper mids that take a step backwards. It can sound very good with some recordings but sibilance can be very tricky in this headphone as well as modern recordings that are bright/loud/compressed by design.

All in all, the K712 is the safe bet here in my view. Soundstage is also better, more layered relative to the other two.
If you really want that cooler DT880's sound with very fast and extended treble response check DT880 (600 Ohm) as it's supposed to be the superior variant.

Hope this helps,
Me x3

Thanks,
I'm fairly sure AKG using the same (basically) 62-Ohm drivers in it's 700 series of headphones
There might be some differences, the K712 getting better tweaks (and lighter materials?) then the lower costing models.
(using lighter materials in the driver/diaphragm helps, but using lighter materials cost more)
The DT880 (which i own) is a fairly balanced sounding headphone, some what a bright sound.
The DT990 (which i own) has a strong bass/treble, U shaped sound.
I'm going to assume you would like the K712, over the DT880/DT990.
