Hello. My name is Mike. I work in film and music restoration.

I don’t use speakers but have exclusively been using Grado SR325e for the last five years. These were recommended by a well-known film audio restoration service person.

The vinyl cable is cracking in several places and I’m about to send them in to be re-cabled. But I decided to see what’s new, Grado-wise, as well as picking up a second set as a backup.

The major thing is I need to make audio repairs that will end up with a commercial product that I know will be heard. In other words, whatever I do can easily be heard by any other listener.

I’ve been wondering if any other Grado phones can provide even more detail than the SR325e’s. I ordered a pair of used Rs2x’s from Amazon as a try-out. I also ordered a pair of the SR325x series.

But I was shocked.

First off I know they have more powerful drivers than the old series, along with an improved, braided cable (thank goodness, they won’t crack like the old ones).

But the frequency curve on the RS2x is way off, and the signal is too weak for proper playback from my laptop workstation.
I assume this requires some sort of additional preamp.

So, out of hand I rejected it.

The same thing with the SR325x’s.

I don’t understand why Grado made such a radical change without warning consumers.

So I am wondering if I am better off getting another used set of SR325e’s and just replacing the cable when the time comes?

I pray when the cables are replaced in my current pair that this will not affect the quality of my sound, also requiring the weird, unannounced pre-amp.

So this is a 2 part question.
1. Are the SR325e’s still a good and accurate representation of the sound? and
2. Is there a better phone I should be investigating?
Will all the old e-series Grados with the same smaller drivers provide the same quality audio, and maybe better?

Specifically now, I’m restoring a movie score with a lot of equalization changes. But it needs to be accurate. It would be terrible if what I’m creating would result a shrill or inaccurate sound. Much work and many, many hours have been spent.

Many thanks for anyone’s help or suggestions!

Perhaps look into a proper studio headphone for audio work, maybe something like the 32ohm version of the Beyerdynamic DT880. Certainly not a fun headphone to listen to, but pretty clear and detailed, and it covers your entire ear as opposed to the Grados.

Thanks - I checked these but I think it's best to go to the Grado Fans thread. I really want to stick with the brand but without the new drivers. It may be that the old SR325's are the only way to go, but with the cables replaced - Mike

Why not get them recabled ? You can also get them modded for detachable cables .
I will have my old ones recabled. But I want to hear from others about getting a backup pair - but without the new drivers. May a used pair, only an advanced model. I still don't get why Grado went this direction without warning its fans. They are a complete radical change. Without a pre-amp add-on they sound just awful.
