If the d-50 is the d-5, then it would probably sound the best, but also be the least portable. (If at all)

I think the D-22 looks a lot better than the D-11, but they should sound about the same (exact same design, just different fascia, I have both at the moment and the D-11 doesn't play

). Anyway, the D-5 is definetely the loudest of them all, but it's even bigger than the others; Personally I wouldn't touch a 171, I dunno why not, but the 1x1 series players are budget...I'm not sure about how budget the D-11 or D-22 were though...still though

Agreed on what's been said so far about the D-50 (D-5 is the same model that was relased in the US). The D-50 was one of the first if not the first PCDP Sony introduced to the world back in 1984, it does have a strong headphone out and has quite bit of slam to it. Despite it's size and bulkiness I'd recommend it above the other models that you've mentioned.

Lemme throw in my lot with the D-5/D-50. I've got 2 of them, if that says anything. Only PCDP that I've seen that will drive HD600's to insane levels, and still sound great, all from the headphone jack.

Course, now if portability is an issue, then you might want to look elsewhere. One of my models has the optional "dock" that holds 6 "C" batteries, and let me tell you, it's like a cinder block that makes nice music.........

Look for Duncan's Vintage portable review if you haven't seen it already.

I seem to remember my D-11 getting around 5 or 6 hours from a set of 4 Nimh AAs, but I haven't used it lately.
