You have to make sure that your onboard motherboard audio codec is bit perfect capale. Also, I'd go for the TOSlink output over the S/PDIF output.

How do I know if my audio codec is bit perfect capable?

I'm using toslink already

That is a very good question.
DaMnEd could very easily answer that question for you. He told me that my audio codec could perfectly output a digital signal. I had the same question as you're having now and when I told him that I had the Realtek ALC889A codec he aswered back: YESSSSSSSSSS!

Before you ask him, check in your motherboard manual which codedc you have.
If he provides you with a list of bit-perfect codecs or a website that has such a list, please report back to the forum and share the info with us. I was always intrigued on which codecs are best.

# Realtek ALC885 High Definition audio CODEC
# 8-channel audio output
# DAC SNR/ADC SNR of 106dB/101dB
# Full-rate lossless content protection technology
# Optical S/PDIF-out and coaxial RCA S/PDIF-out interfaces

that's what my manual says..

From what i read online the 88* realtek chips can do bit-perfect but not the other series. I tried using the DTS test file and all I get is noise. so I am not sure if I am getting bit-perfect or not..

Did you ask the user DaMnEd? bitperfect means that was is sent to your dac is the same as what is stored on the hard drive. There is no supression or altering of the code. So it it lossless.
Regarding your codec, I do not know if it is bit-perfect capable. if you have read so then it is I guess but it's better to check with DaMnEd.

Something very important that you ought to do is updating your Realtek drivers to the latest version.

According to what I rea donline only certain Realtek chips can do bit-perfect.. Mine wasn't one of them.

So I went back to the Chaintech instead and the DTS file did work fine when using the latest Vista drivers (5.60 I think)

punk_guy182: what settings are you using for bit-perfect/wasapi with the realtek ALC-889A? I have the same setup going to my dac, but when I read the alc-889a app note from realtek it resamples everything to 48 KHz. Under the realtek control panel (or windows sound control panel) I have my default digital output set to 16-bit/48 KHz, though my dac also supports 44.1 and 88.2 KHz.
