So if I'm understanding you correctly, the big problem is that DN's are too warm on in the mid-low spectrum? I think I may agree with you if that is the case, as given the choice I usually prefer the lower mids to be very neutral (though not FLAT) and not "full" as it leaves metal sounding bloated or compressed.
 
So based on that, I'd expect this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB_zVyuAEDk&t=16m34s to sound better on the H-200s, and probably this too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhQhH2VJfw0

Blind Guardian - Imaginations
H200: Guitars have more crunch. @1:22 the H200 pulls ahead because the double bass kicks are faster and punchier.
DN-1000 very full sounding... very thick!
 
Blind Guardian - Road of No Release
It's a toss up... really close between the two but i still prefer the colder sound signature of H200.
 
 
Nightwish - Planet Hell
The DN1000 sounds good enough in this song but H200 is more articulate in the bass drum kicks and colder sounding in the lower mids. The DN-1000 is a little bit too full sounding here.
 
Therion - Secret of the Runes
It's almost a tie here because the DN1000 seems to present the guitars just as good as the H200.  The Dunu then loses because it's hard to distinguish the bass kicks... if you're a drummer, you'll have a difficult time figuring out the kicks and timings. The Bass decay is just not fast enough to offer better resolution in the bass end.
 
This is just a quick listen in the first 4 mins of every song.

So one last question before I bite the bullet on the H-200.. what are your thoughts on the Triple-Fi 10 for metal (if you've heard it)?
 
I found the midrange way too thick and heavy to really work best with metal, though it responded to EQ pretty well in order to open up the midrange. Just seeing if you had similar impressions?

Sorry mate, I haven't tried the tf10's. I was supposed to get it but was recommended the h200 instead.

i have Westone W3, and i am curently listening to the album Six degrees of seperation from Dream Theatre, and i must say i am really enjoing the sound i am hearing...well balanced, clear, good stage width and depth...loving it...the guitars have good texture...a bit 3d...the drums have a nice impact and quick response. The bass digs in nicely and  have nice texture...the voice is clear and natural...the musician are easy to pinpoint.
 
I am using a cowon Z2, and my files are all aiff ripped with XLD in perfect bit...this setup is about 500.00 in total cost...oh year and i use poweramp as a playback software, makes a nice difference.
