I'm trying to make a disc of depressive songs, but something with changing moods.

Basically it shuold start with songs about how screwed up the world is, and how depressing the rat race works etc. Then it should either move to something extra ordinary happening to a person like falling in love or some religious awakning. In any event it should highlight that one event can change a person's outlook on life. Finally it should end with happy songs which show the world isn't all that bad. Like the song I think i'll end the cd with is Steve Hackett - This World which includes lyrics like "never loose your smile" "never loose your head" "please don't take this world from me"

Currently I've only got a few of them

Gary Jule - Mad World <- an obvious start to the disc
Seatbelts - Is it Real <- Talking about the world getting to hard sometimes and simply locking yourself out. (from the cowboy bebop sountrack)
Steve Hackett - This World <- it's about growing up and being happy with life.

Other ones i'm considering:
Pink Floyd - Us and them <- i'm thinking this might actually be too upbeat for the disc. The disc should be slow.
Peter Gabriel - I Grieve <- strongly considering this song seeing how a death can be so dramatic that it can cause depression and/or cure it.

Songs must be slow and have good lyrics. The songs towards the end can be faster but must be euphoric in a way. So can anyone out there help?

i could probably think of a couple of songs that'll fit the idea, but not necessarily the genre of the music you've selected so far...

"We Are the Pigs" by Suede (or The London Suede if you're in the US)... truly a depressing song with lyrics that fits within current events.

"Sunday Bloody Sunday" by U2... this one should be well known enough.

"And Then" by Depeche Mode... the chorus goes "to put it all down and start again, from the top to the bottom and then, i have faith, or i prefer, to think that things couldn't turn out worse"

"It's Alright" by Pet Shop Boys... the song starts with listing how messed up the world is, then goes on about how music still has the power to uplift and outlive all the bad things that's happening. it isn't a Pet Shop Boys written song, but rather a cover version of an obscure disco song.

i'm sure i can think of more, but i have to go soon...

Sorry, I'm starting to fall asleep... Here's a list of possible candidates for what I'd put on the disc. The first 18 songs are more or less what I am thinking at this point is what I'd put on the disc were I making it. But I am still working on the order that I'd put everything in and thus some of the other songs may end up replacing some that are in the top 18. I hope that makes some sense... Like I said, I'm falling asleep. Good luck making this album, it's a very good idea. Hope some of the songs I put on the list make in onto your album.

I don't think U2 have changed moods in 25 years!

Oh...changing moods within the whole CD, I get it. SBS is an excellent choice actually.

REM would have songs that fit all the moods required.

indeed. Oh my thanks a lot Jasper. I have most of thoes songs. Running on faith, and almost blue definatly made the list. I'm thinking so does garth brooks - the storm. Evanescence is definatly too upbeat (my imortal is the exception of course) for the disc though. It's supposed to have a more late night, rainy day appeal. Diana Krawl is a great choice.

yeah eyeteeth i'm basically trying to tell a story with a compilation disc. That's why it needs changing moods.

for the postitive side of the album definately check out LeAnn Rimes - Some People and Garth Brooks - The Change. For the start, I can't think of a better "the world is screwed up" song than Jewel's - Pieces of You. You might also what to have a listen to Celine Dion's - It's All Coming Back to Me Now.
