I think the SRH840 ll be better for you but the 840 is less efficient than the M50 and with an ipod, its not the best choice, but concerning SQ, the SRH840 is a step up from M50.
 
With 300$ you have the choice.

V-modaaa m80. wonderful cans that Ive recently picked up. Loved them ever since.
however its a little bass light for my taste, compared to the pro 900's that I very love as well. BASS HEADS.
