I'd suggest checking out the 173P then... great looking monitor imo.
and probably more towards your price range? give or take?

Do LCDs still look like crud when NOT running in native resolution? A 19" is usually natively at 1600x1200, and its a bit difficult for my video card to keep up in the newer games such as doom3 at that large a resolution. Are newer models still suffering?

I think it depends on the LCD. I've heard of that problem, but when I first got my 2001FP I had a 9700 Pro so I mainly played at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 and it looked fine. Then I got a 6800 GT and built an A64 3400+ rig, so now I only play at 1600x1200 of course.

So I know the 2001FP scales well, but I can't speak for other panels.

I love my Dell 2001FP. Dell has it now for $550 USD. It's 1600x1200 native, but if you select another resolution, it'll just give you a smaller picture, instead of making things look blurry.

Oh, and I've NEVER seen a 19" LCD that's native 1600x1200. Usually it;s 1280x1024, with lesser quality ones dipping to 1024 x 768

doesnt look as sharp and well defined.. but if youre playing 3d games i dont think youd really notice that... i wouldnt do windows app in non-native resolution , though

Wow, people actually like the Dell 2001FP? I tested one recrently and wasn't happy with it at all. The black was too bright and in FPS games there was still ghosting (or rather smearing) when turning or moving. Maybe it is because I am still using CRTs and don't know any other LCDs that may be even worse.

YMMV, I suppose.

Perhaps it wasnt setup/calibrated correctly?

The black on mine is as black as my other CRT's and theres only 2 games where I notice any ghosting in them (haloPC, homeworld2).
There are LCD's that are far far worse. Go try and play a game on a 25ms pannel

I don't think there were any setup problems since I used the DVI connector and there wasn't much to setup anyway. I also tried adjusting the brightness but no luck. It's important to compare the blacks with fairly low ambient light as you would have when watching movies etc..
And while we're at it. The 2001FP had three standard "color temperatures" or however they were called. And all three settings were far from neutral, i.e. greys had fairly strong color casts. I found that pretty strange/stupid.

And yes, you're right. Other LCDs are probably a lot worse. That's why I will not switch to an LCD for now even though my current CRT is incredibly blurry.

I've got an LG L1720B 17 inch and my eyes just cannot get used to it at all, sure the colours are better than my old CRT monitor but there's just something about this LCD that's giving me bad eye strain... the native resolution is 1280 x 1024 but text and stuff is just way too small for comfort..... I prefer 1024 x 768 but if you run the LCD at that resolution the quality is not as good.. to be honest I wish I never bought it and would gladly go back to a high quality CRT any day.

If anyone is interested in a Mint LCD with 2 years and 9 months warranty remaining then give me a shout! No dead pixels / boxed / brand new condition.

Please, please, PLEASE tell me where you found this at that price. Dell has it listed at $799 on their site. $550 would be the best deal that I have ever seen for a monitor that good.

Dell has sales every now and then. Early in November they had them for around $500

Check ebay, there are lots of new ones on there (leftover from that sale) that are going for around $600 shipped.

Thank you for the help. I am probably going for the 710 T or N, depending on money. The 173P is too much, and the other types arent well-represented here in HUN.

Thread at Anandtech

There is also a similar post at FatWallet.com.

I just bought 2 new Dell 1704FPVs for $590 total (tax and shipping included). The choice was between a 20" and the 2 17"s. I use my computer mainly for web browsing, music stuff, programming and other class work and I rarely play games. I decided the dual monitor setup was a better choice than 1 big one. So far I am very happy with both monitors.
