Budget is at max $300. Here's what I'm looking for...

1. I don't have a headphone amp, nor do I plan on getting one soon. So I need something that will sound good without an amp.
2. I would prefer open cans, but closed are fine. Definitely not an IEM.
3. I usually wear glasses at night, so nothing that will clamp down on the sides of my head. I've never had full sized headphones, but it's always been one of my worries. I also have a pretty big head.

I was leaning towards the Sennheiser HD555 for less than $100, but I thought maybe I'd go a little higher end if there is a good option. Thanks for any recommendations, I appreciate it

I've got glasses as well and Senn 590/595/600/650, AKG 271S and Grado 225 w C-Pads have been just fine. 225s, and all other Prestige series Grados for that matter, with flats and bowls have not worked for me.

It really depends on your frames, ears, etc. as to what will fall within your comfort range. I have thin frames and odd shaped ears so supra-aural pads put a lot of pretty on a very small area. Circumaural headphones spread it out over the frames more and end up being just fine from a comfort standpoint.

With HD555 and HD595, I had some problems with my glasses and my big head... After some hours it really begins to hurt.

For comfort, the DT990s are the best headphones I ever tried. I sometimes forget I wear them, even after a whole day. They're also some of the best cans for rock at this price. Mine are 250 ohms and are quite hard to drive without an amp, but I think they also exist in 32 ohms (not sure for the 2005 version, though).

You can alsoo look for Sennheiser HD600 or 650, which are more comfy (and better sounding) than the 5XX, but also more expansive. (EDIT: not sure you can drive these 2 without an amp)

Hey, lets not forget the HD580.....it's as comfy and as good sounding as the 600 (they use the same drivers....just slight difference in enclosure). The 650 is out of your price range, but it's easier to drive then the 580 and 600 (it has a higher sensitivity).

Since I don't have glasses, I can't comment on comfort of phones.....but the HD555 and 595 are good all rounder phones (the 595 is the best value IMHO). They don't need an amp the way other Senns do

I just realized that HD595 seems to have a low impedance (50ohm), which means they are easy to drive without an amp right? $178.99 is the cheapest I can find (Amazon). Does this seem like a good price, or should I save some money and go with the HD555?

If you can go for the HD595, I would recommend them. Good all rounders that don't need to be as amped as other audiophile headphones. Hear they are a real improvement over the 555. Haven't heard the 555, but own the 595!
