help me find my first decent guitar amp
Oct 6, 2007 at 6:27 PM Post #31 of 42
Wooo weee... I just picked up a slightly modified (NOS tubes and Mojo Tone speaker) Pignose G40V for only $200 clams!!!

The guy selling it said that he had 225 into it doing upgrades and such. Also said that he demoed several speakers before finding one with good tone. He also told me that if I wanted to change tubes to "Do NOT throw away those tubes!" I guess it took him a long time to find some decent tubes for it

.

Now I just need to figure out how to work it

Quick ?? There is a Volume and a Master, which one is usually the Gain? There is also a Presence control which seems to resemble somewhat of a subtle echo/reverb effect.

This guy (at the Zone Music musician's flea market) also had several other vintage type amps for sale. He wanted $300 for a Epiphone Valve Jr and he had lots of different lap/slide guitars.

Anyways... off to annoy the neighbors

Woot! I just scored a practically new 12" Eminence/Fender speaker that came out of a Bluse Jr. on ebay for only $22.50
tongue.gif

I'm going to either build a seperate box for it or replace the 10" speaker that is inside the Piggy.

I havent looked at the Valveking, but the G40V has 2 - 6L6 power tubes (mine have Solvtek) and 3 - 12ax7 preamp tubes. V1 is a GE JG-5751, V2 is a W. German 'The Fisher' ECC 81/12AT7 and V3 just says USA 5751.
I do have a pair of JJ gold pin ECC 83S that I picked up for my dared mp-5, but they were too dark for the dared/ms-pro combo, and I'm curious as hell what they would sound like in the Piggy.

Sorry to hear about yuor problems with the guitar. It doesn't seem to me to be very much to go wrong with one other than a really screwed up neck (meaning can't be straightened) since basically they are just a chunk of wood with 6 strings stretched tightly accross them. It the issue is the strings going out of tune when you use the trem heavily, that is a common complaint with strat style tremolos unless you get a Floyd Rose type locking one or something like the Bigsby that is on my Falcon and roller type bridge saddles and/or a roller nut.

Hope you get things worked out soon tho.

Oh... and the Piggy sounds just awesomly sweet with the strat and single coils!! But every where I read, it will sound even better plugged into a speaker cab. ( thus why the snagging of the 12" Blues Jr speaker on ebay)

The "volume" control is usually pre-amp gain. The "master" control is usually a master volume (i.e., it comes after the pre-amp in the signal path).

So, if you want pre-amp distortion at low volumes, turn the "volume" control up and the "master" control down.

the problem with the new guitar is that the floyd rose (like) trem on it needs to be set up properly. the person at the guitar shop couldnt do it so have to see a specialist. The result of this is that the strings buzz at the slightest opportunity and they also go out of tune at the slightest opportunity. this guitar has a double locking trem and it goes out of tune MORE than my guitar with a strat like trem did. im taking the guitar in on wednesday so we will see how things pan out.

When you take it in on wednesday, I would ask the tech if he will show you how to do some of the adjustments yourself (if you feel like you are capable) Even a few simple tweeks like a slight truss rod adjustment can make a world of difference in playability.

i tried out the vox ac15 and im really split between it and the valveking.

Anything to help me make up my mind would be very much appreciated. Also, does anyone know where to find reviews on these?

I was looking at the Fender Champ 600 and the Pignose, but neither were in stock at guitar center and both were more than I wanted to spend anyways, so I went with the drop dead sexy amazing Epiphone Valve Junior (head version) - have it hooked up to a 4x12 cab, this baby sings.

Go to HarmonyCentral.com the user reviews page has tons of reviews/impressions and experiences with hordes of guitar gear

Yesterday I finished a down and dirty speaker box for the 12" Blues Jr speaker that I snagged from ebay. Wow what a totally different tone than the MojoTone 10" Alnico speaker that is in the Pignose. A deeper, richer tone without as much bite. What is nice is the way Pignose has the 8 Ohm and 4 Ohm speaker outs as 1/4" mono jacks and the speakers can just jack in for easy swapping. I also picked up a Y splitter so that I can plug both speakers (8 Ohms each) into the 4 Ohm jack at the same time.

It's hard to tell which one I like better. They both sound damn good, but they are definately different

I also swapped out the V1 (GE JG-5751) preamp tube for a JJ gold pin CC83S and have the gain set so it just slightly starts to break up. This thing, even without any effects, is just so much different sounding than my VOX AD30VT. I really don't want to get rid of the Vox, because of the veratility of all the modeling and the built in effects, but damn, this real all tube amp is so schweeet!!

One of the coolest thngs about the Vox AD30VT is that it is pretty close on the modeling of 11 pretty popular amps from years past. I found this posted in one of the VOX forums.

****Pasted Text****
11 amps in total are modelled in the ADVT range: -

AC15 - Channel 2 of a 1962 Vox AC15
AC30TB - Vox AC30 'Top-boost'
BOUTIQUE CL - Dumble 100w head (clean channel)(NB: this is NOT modelled on the Overdrive special - Vox made an error in the manual & got the Boutique clean & Boutique overdrive text mixed up! - the descriptions in the AD60/120 manuals are correct)
BLACK 2x12 - Fender 'Blackface' Twin Reverb
TWEED 4x10 - 1959 Fender 4x10 Bassman
UK ’70s - 1971 Marshall 50w Plexi Head (high treble channel)
UK ’80s - 1983 100w Marshall JCM800 head
UK MODERN - Marshall JCM2000 DSL100 head (High gain channel)
NUMETAL - 100w Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier head(modern high gain channel) (also referred to as RECTO)
US HIGAIN - Soldano SLO100 Head (hi-gain channel)
BOUTIQUE OD - Dumble Overdrive Special 100w head (overdrive channel)
**** End Pasted Text***

So far, my favorite models are the AC30TopBoost and the Tweed 4x10 altho the Clean Boutique is also pretty nice. But none of them sound as sweet and silky smooth as the Pignose.

But you have to remember that my Pignose isn't stock anymore because the previous owner put a MojoTone MP10RHD that has an Alnico magnet instead of ceramic and he also installed good tubes.

I can't wait until I get that Boss Multi-Effects pedals to pump through it!
