I'm tired of this Starbucks revolution- what I need is a cozy coffee house where I can sit down with a cup of coffee and get some studying done. Have any recommendations?
What part of town? There are actually plenty of regular coffee houses here still unlike the most of the U.S.
Right across the street from me is the Coffee Pot at 49th Street and 9th Avenue. They have some couches too and people are generally there doing work or reading the papers.
These places let you stay as long as Starbucks? (with couches?)
You mentioned studying, so lighting and noise would be important.
The only one I saw that looked low key and inviting was The Big Cup in Chelsea but they closed over a year ago.
The West Village and NYU area are filled with little coffee shops.
There is that 4 corners (McDougal & Bleecker)...where all 4 corners are little cafes... *Warning: VERY touristy and TONS of people watching...NOT...quiet and cozy.
Doggone it...why can't I remember the names of the cafes I used to go to?
Try a few and see which one you like the best. Try to go to one with a nice book on a rainy afternoon and THEN you will know if it is the right one for you.

i love Hell's Kitchen. it's a little loud, but they have some great restaurants. you ever eat at Esca? my favorite italian/seafood in the city.
p.s. i'm no help for the coffee house suggestion. i've always gravitated toward good old fashioned booze bars.
