I currently use a sound card and gen1 magni to power my DT990s for gaming/movies/music and I want to upgrade to something better.

I have been looking at either a jotunheim or bifrost/asgard 2 combo. Im kinda leaning towards the combo at the moment, because I can find second hand equipment for less than the relatively new jotunheim.

Also, is there any software for digital surround sound? That is mainly the only reason I use the sound card, ideally I would want an external DAC to act as the DAC in my setup.

Any recommendations?

edit: also forgot to mention Im getting the HD6xx from massdrop, just waiting on them for the new set up

Make and model of sound card?
Do you have the DT990 32-Ohm or 250-Ohm or 600-Ohm version?

For improving audio quality, you might be better off upgrading from the DT990, then replacing the Magi (Gen 1).

Do you have a budget?

Hey, I just upgraded my 1st gen magni with a 1st gen modi as well, picked up here on Head-fi for $50. Try that as a stack and see how you liked it. There was an immediate improvement for me.

Sorry, I just edited saying I will be getting the hd6xx from the massdrop. I currently have the dt990 250 ohm

budget is around 500 USD

What add-on sound card do you have or are you using the motherboard's on-board audio?

Others can correct if I’m wrong as I have not tried it but have heard you can use the optical out or maybe even coaxial out on the sound card you can use the surround effects from the card with a external dac with those inputs. I have equipment to test it but I am too lazy to do it ; ). There is software that will do that also Out of your head is one that does a great job .

Well the 990’s might do well with the DarkVoice but the 6xx’s might be a problem. I loaned my Bottlehead Crack to another Head-Fi’er that didn’t get to hear it at a meet and he has the 650’s and found a awesome deal on a 336SE and said he understood why they called it a DarkVoice as it was very warm not a problem with power.
