So I've been dipping my toes in the world of trance/house music but I haven't been very adventurous so far.

Here's what I've got:

John Digweed - Global Undergroud: Los Angeles
Sasha - Global Underground: San Francisco
Sasha & John Digweed - Communicate
Sasha & John Digweed - Northern Exposure
Sasha & John Digweed - Northern Exposure 2: East Coast Edition
Sasha & John Digweed - Northern Exposure 2: West Coast Edition
DJ Dan - In Stereo

As you can see, I found two DJs I like and haven't strayed far from them. I really like Digweed's Los Angeles album, Communicate and the 1st Northern Exposure. I hate Northern Exposure 2: East Coast Edition and I don't like DJ Dan - In Stereo either.

Since I didn't like DJ Dan I don't think I want to go to straight-up house and I'd also like to stay away from stuff like the East Coast Edition of Northern Exposure.

Should I continue with the Global Underground series or is there a better way for me to go for my next purchase?

Thanks in advance.

Does stuff like Chemical Bros., Crystal Method, Lords of Acid fall into that genre or is that more like Techno??

chemical bros are more "techno" slash "electronic", not many vocals

I listen to mostly trance, the bigger names are:
DJ Tiesto
Armin van Buuren
Ian Van Dahl
Paul Oakenfold
Paul Van Dyke
ATB

others, smaller but very good:
BT
Markus Schultz
Matt Darey
Gabriel & Dredsen (** Prob my number 1 right now)
Ferry Corsten
Infected Mushroom (more psy / goa trance - ish)

google "a state of trance". its a radio show hosted my armin thats usually a great sampler of popular euro trance. you can find a streamrip torrent somewhere very easily to download (legally) and test out. find a song you like and find more from that artist

Trance -- these two artists are musts:

LSG (Oliver Lieb, not the boy-band trio) -- see especially things like The Black Album and In Too Deep;
Shpongle, Are You Shpongled

Perhaps some of Paul Oakenfeld's stuff as Perfecto. I like that.

DJ Tiesto is good start. He has been the number one DJ in the world for a few years now. "just be" album is really good. If you are looking for more of the trance mix album there "in search of sunrise" albums may be the way to go. When listening to his albums some of the song will already know. All Trance DJ use other DJs material.

Gabriel and Dresden also are a good mix. Had a song called "As the Rush comes" they called themselves Motorcycle. Had a remix of the Duncan Sheik song "On a high" which is great.

You need to find artist that you like. Certain DJ's in trance I like and certain ones I don't. I would download from a peer-to-peer first to see if you like it then buy the album after hearing a few songs.

check out Vitalic and his new album Ok Cowboy. if you're a downloader of illegal music, try: "My Friend Dario" and "Trahison" just to see if that's your thing. i personally loved it.

also, do you like Prodigy? Fat of the Land and Music for the Jilted Generation are truly incredible albums.

and i'd also recommend DJ Shadow... try "Organ Donor" from his masterpiece album Endtroducing.... everytime i play it to my friends they go nuts.

...but, actually, i'm not even sure if this is what you're looking for.

hope i was of some help and good luck with your journey.

This won't be my next purchase since I already have a bunch by these guys, but is this worth having?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I'm keeping this all for reference. If you've got more, keep 'em coming.

It's way, way, way, worth owning. Get the new remastered version.
Also by the same artists. YOU MUST GET the third Northern Exsposure CD "Expeditions" by Sasha and Digweed.
Digweed- "Fabric 20"
Digweed- Bedrock
Digweed-Hong Kong GU
Digweed- Sydney GU
Digweed- MMII
Sasha- Involver
Sasha- Ibiza GU
Sasha- Airdrawndagger
Sasha- Xpander
These are all worth owning, some of course are better than others. The two newest offerings from them...Fabric20 and Involver are both a little different but VERY GOOD.
The Bedrock, Ibiza, and San Francisco are must owns....Heck they all are!

This mix cd in many people's eyes defined how a mix album should become. They define it as the pinacle of the modern mix tape, and before the reprint, copies of this bad boy sold for hundreds on ebay. And now Digweed and Sasha are two of the best known "Progressive" artists out there. If you liked any of Digweeds older stuff, I would pick this up.

Continuing with your journey into progresiive house, as many people will define the stufff you enjoy. I would have to de-recomend the trancy stuff, I am acutally a Trance DJ so I have nothing agianst it, but I dont think you will be into it. Here is some starter albums I recomend.
1. Dave Seamen - Global Underground (He has 3, different ones, I recomend the first, and although I adore his latest stuff, it is alot more like DJ Dan).
2. Max Graham - Transport 4 (Amazing album, top notch, definetly worth at least a dozen listens)
3. Herman Cattaneo's latest will suit you well I believe (the one for Rennanse Records)
If you feel like expairmenting a little bit with the sound, I would suggest
Shpongle - Tales of the Inexpresable -(Goa/Psy Trance/World/Amazing)
Danny Tenaglia Global Undergound NYC- Tribal/a new spin on old school house
Chris Fortier - Balance 007 - Brand new stuff, kind of expairmental in direction including artish such as !!! formerly on Warp records, Rabbit in the Moon, and Jussi Pekka on a massive 3 disc collection. Sorry for the spelling, I got to go, I have an Electronica Radio show in 30 minutes.
