I was looking for headphones that could be found somewhere like ebay for around $150 (MSRP $250ish)

I listen to rock and hip hop so bass is important. I narrowed it down to the M50s and the DT770 PRO. And i may or may not buy an amp.

Which pair of cans is better?

Which pair has the best base?

Is there a pair of cans in my price range that are better?

ATH-M50's are better cans. Their bass is better and so is their mids. I find the DT770's bass to be a little to energetic for my liking.

How would those two cans compare to the Shure SRH840s?

Yes; however, the V6 is the exact same headphone and the difference is a sticker. It's ~$30 cheaper too.

Audio-Technica is always better. Then again, I'm pretty biased.

i have had both. still have the m50

the m50 has a very pleasent neutral with a bass kick sound. the 770pro is a thudding jackhammer with screeching highs

I own DT770 80 ohm and SRH840s, and the Shure headphones have a more realistic sound- drums sound exactly like drums, instruments and voices can all be heard very clearly. Both have powerful bass, but the DT770s have greater impact (can almost feel the wind on my ears) which can overpower the higher bass registers so drums do not sound as realistic and mids (voice, guitar) are not as prominent. One advantage of the DT770s is that they sound more open, whereas the SRH840s have a more closed sound, like you've put sea shells over your ears.
