it looks it has a single balanced armature driver, the cable is very similar to the ones used by JH audio (not westone because westone uses the "button" slider and JH audio typically uses the clear tubing slider. maybe a obscure shure headphone?

It's not a Shure; I worked there 20 years.

It is shaped like the E1, but that had a beige case. And there was never a version with a clear case. Maybe this was Westone's version? (Originally, Westone was the source of, and manufacturer of, Shure's original E1. In fact, you can trace Shure, Westone and Ultimate all back to the same common roots. And by extension, JH, too, come to think of it.)

If it's from that E1 family (BTW, I still use my E1s on occasion...), that would make it more than 10 years old - likely closer to 15.

And some description here (in chinese): http://club.pchome.net/thread_15_180_2036698__.html
It says there are some cable(?) and sound (esp. in highs) differences between Shure E1 and these Westone UM1.  Shure's are made in Mexico, while Westone's are made in Colorado.

Interesting. Never knew there was an older version of the UM1.

that's why I kept thinking um1. It was in the back of my mind till I looked up a picture of the um1 and saw the modern version. I remembered that the original shure e1 and e5 were made by westone.
