no, you don't need to amp. i don't think you should use the attenuator that comes with the shures, most people say it handily kills the highs or something.
my attenuator is the er4p to s adapter. 25$ from head-direct.com. most hiss gone (less than using an amp) and small. the portable remains portable. sony have never made the approach that they are making the best sounding players like kenwood or iaudio say so people just go 'ooooo' but they make some great sounding if a bit not for you sound. i love them other than the hiss but only for low ohm phones - not for proper headphones.
