I kind of pulled it out of my laptop in a weird way and when it popped out I noticed a chunk of the tip missing. (I've attached a picture of the broken jack)

I have a Samson SR850, and even though they are cheap and easily replaceable I spent over 300 hours listening to music on these so they're burned in very well and really don't want to buy a new set and start from scratch. Also I've already bonded with this pair and I have some sort of abandonment issues...

So instead of replacing the pair I saw it as an opportunity to learn some soldering and replace the wiring on them. I understand I can just replace the jack it self but since I'm gonna have the solder out might as well go all out. I wanted to have a detachable wire set-up going, I think this is set-up called a short cable (example: http://i.imgur.com/NyWmF.jpg) I would also like to have a wire that's not wrapped in the standard wire plastic. I'm not sure what the cloth-like material is (paracord?) but I'd like one of those. (example: http://i.imgur.com/0Cg1P.jpg)

So with all that said, what parts should I be looking for? Are there any DIY guides/tutorials you guys suggest I look at to get a better understanding of what to do? Any tips? Do you think I can keep the cost for this under $20?

Note: I opened up the headphones this morning and took a look at where the wire is soldered into the headphones. I only have a cable coming out of one side so I'm guessing what ever cable I purchase will have to have two left, and two right and one ground (or 2?) running through the cable. right?

Any and all help is appreciated. I'll try to make a DIY video out of this so newbies in the future can benefit!

Hey!
I just finished a bunch of stuff up and I do have some extra supplies lying around that you can buy from me for pretty cheap. Since you only need a bit its easier to buy what you need instead of a huge amount like I ended up getting.

I have a bunch of heat shrink, about 2 feet of http://www.ebay.ca/itm/10-feet-26-AWG-Shielded-Silver-Plated-Wire-2-Twisted-Kynar-/230771028776?pt=US_Audio_Cables_Adapters&hash=item35bb067328 and about 10 feet of paracord http://www.ebay.ca/itm/3-8-BRAIDED-NYLON-SLEEVING-audio-TECHFLEX-25-ft-/230347097175?pt=Boat_Parts_Accessories_Gear&hash=item35a1c1c457 in 3/32"

Shoot me a pm, i'm sure I could mail you some of the stuff for a couple bucks + $2 shipping from Canada.

No clue what guides you can look at but you would basically need heat shrink, the braided sleeving, a bit of wire and a 3.5mm male jack. You can check out lunashops for those, I like the http://www.lunashops.com/goods.php?id=1253

Although rather then have a short cable sticking out, why don't you just put a 3.5mm socket there? Then you don't need any special cables as any 3.5mm male to male will work fine

Will two feet of wire suffice?

Well depends on what you want to make, if you are just rewiring with a short cable, it shouldn't take more then a couple inches depending on how long you want. If you are making a longer cable you would need more length.

Just checked my stash, one wire (one linked above) is 2 stranded, shielded (so you also have a ground) and I have about 1.75 feet of it
The other cable I have is 3 stranded heat shrinked (navship as well), about 1.25 feet.
