Hey, I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 with ALSA USB bout, a USB to SPDIF converter box (generic from Frys) to Beresford tc7510 to Heed Canamp and I've tried just about every audio player for Ubuntu and the every format the sound is clipping really loud during playback. This is the first time I've used USB audio out for anything so it's a first problem for me.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Try ReplayGaining your music. foobar supports it. I'm assuming your songs are lossy.

ReplayGain won't help if it's lossless... I was thinking it could be an underpowered amp, but the Heed Canamp isn't exactly a slouch. What headphones/speakers are you using and are you sure it's clipping you hear?

Solved...

Solution: install Windows 7. There just aren't any Ubuntu drivers for the USB to spdif converter that I was using.

Everything is working fine with foobar in windows 7. Feels weird, I haven't used windows for over 3 years.
