What are the benefits and short comings of a tube amp vs a digital amp? Besides the distortion at high amplitudes.

Pick your poison and go from there. They both have their strengths. I prefer tubes. That is just me.

Tube amps may not be as accurate as solid state, but solid state can clip.

Of corse this is debatable, but that's the general idea.

I like tubes.

X2

You can easily change a tube amp's sound by changing tubes (tube rolling).
SS are not easily modified.

Tube Amp : easy to fix/mod (if P2P wiring is used), beautiful tubes glows, tube rolling (can be pros/cons), heavy, certain tubes can be very expensive and rare to find, cheap tube amps sounds mediocre (more metal = more $$).

Solid State : generally cheaper, smaller, lighter, requires little maintenance if any at all, not as beautiful as tube amps
