You will definitely need an amp for the DT880. Actually, you'll be needing quite a powerful amp. A 250ohm impediance is DEFINITELY well within amp territory.

err... errmmm.. hmm...
the impediance has nothing to do with it. In the same way, one could argue that a low impedance can requires an amp cause a lot of sources can't deliver the necessary current. The 880s may very well benefit from an amp, but that's not the determining factor.

And personally, if I liked the sound signature of phone A over phone B, I'll wager that A will sound better to me unamped than B with an amp anyday. And there's nothing stopping me from getting an amp in the future. This is a bad method to base a decison on.

I'd say an amp is a must for the DT880 if paired with *any* modern portable source. Not only will it lack dynamics, you probably won't even be able to get it up to listenable levels without an amp.

Also, DT880 will expose any/all flaws in a portable source... it's not a forgiving headphone at all, so unless you're prepared to find another source if necessary, I wouldn't bother. That said, it can be used with portable + amp, if the source is "worthy"... my point is that you won't know for sure until you listen awhile with the DT880.

to my ears, they sounded strikingly similar, but I didn't much time with them. And it was a long time ago. Folks who have had more time with the A900 claim there is a drastic difference in its bass. Also, obviously, they are closed and will have isolation the AD900 doesn't.

Check out the comments Crypt and Snufkin make in this thread. I think you'll find them to be pretty helpful.

That thread is recommending the A700 over the A900. no minimal differences. what?
