I connected the iPod and there was software update. I downloaded it and the iPod restarted and never reappeared. The Apple logo stays on the screen constantly.
I have done the following:
Tried to reset iPod.
Dowloadaded latest iTunes.
Put iPod in disk mode.
Restored iPod.
Everything syncs alright and then the Apple logo is still there. I have searched all over Apple support pages.

Any help or ideas are appreciated.

You've pretty much done what you can. I would say this unit should be returned - it's under warranty. If you're able to somehow locate the first firmware update, you could restore it to that update but when I had a simialr problem with a 4th gen ipod I was told by Apple to return it (it was still under warranty).

Let the battery deplete and charge again. This cured my sister´s nano after the most recent "update".
