hello!

i am new to this forum and headphones... "hello! again!" after looking at few headphones to use with my ipod, walking around new york city, i ended up buying sennheiser hd 25sp. it looked most simple and isn't as big as other headphones...(before i used b & o ear plug headphones)

i read it somewhere in this forum about "breaking-in period..." "burn-in times..." what is that? and how do i do it? and is there anyway i can swap cord to a shorter one?

thank you for any information..... have a fantastic day!

p.s. a friend already yelled at me for buying this headphone... so don't yell at me for buying a wrong one....

Welcome to Head-Fi ProtoDAda

"Break-in" is a process of putting sound through your headphones allowing the components to "settle and flex." The sound of your headphone will improve after the break-in period.

Tell your friend that you are becoming a junkie and you need his/her support.

By the way, sorry about your wallet.

i wouldn't worry about "break-in" as you are outside in a noisey environment. just use as you normally would. this will break them in fine.

the problem i had, walking the streets of nyc, was that since it was noisey i would turn up the volume higher to mask out the city cacaphony/din and this will over time cause ear damage. and instead of rocking music, i suggest the opposite - slow rythmic, melodic soothing music.

Yeah be very careful outside. Try playing some very bassy music inot them for a few days. BUT NOT TOO LOUD! Just alittle louder then you normally would listen to them. This really made my Grados less screechy bright.

hello!

thank you for all the advises..... i was using the headphones today..... wondering manhattan. i must say it blocks out a lot of outside noise..... i like the fact that i can't hear people chatting.... but now i am extra careful that i don't get run over by bike messengers.... i think with ipod, it won't sound loud enough for me to go deaf.... i hope not... thank you for the warning though.... my mom will appreciate that...

it doesn't help. one hit me going the wrong way. at 30mph them suckers hurt!

i remember crossing 53rd St & 5th ave - saw a messenger get hit by a car. he was going the wrong way. after crossing the street, i looked down at him and said, "bet that'll ruin your day."

i also saw a guy get hit by a car. he was knocked right out of his shoes. and once a guy slammed on his brakes and he was 1" from hitting me at the knees. it was my light.

ah, nyc - where taxis go smashing through bank windows, crash into cafes & wipe out a dozen people; where cranes fall down into people; where bricks fall off buildings and knock people out. then there's the usual shots where people get killed after winning at OTB... the muggers, the thieves... steam pipes blowing up, spewing asbestos into the air. i once saw a guy step on a manhole cover only to have it blow up - he went over 50' into the air (over tree top level). i don't step on manhole covers to this day! and funny how manhole explosions don't make the news when the POTUS or Vice President come to town...

i've had my fill of nyc and i hope to never see it again.

NEVER WALK ON THE SAME SIDE OF A CONSTRUCTION SITE!
Never Step On Manhole Covers.

You may still be getting ear damage if you are listening to your headphones higher than what is normal. Sure, the ipod might not blast you to the point where you are thinking to yourself "this is too loud", but especially with ambient noise around you you want to make sure you are listening at a good level. You might want to check the volume every once in a while and compare it to other noises like people talking and such (without your headphones on.)

I would just hate to see another head-fier with tinnitus or other ear problem, so listen responsibly!

I got hit by a car about a month ago, whilst riding my bike. In the area i live in in california, there are all these pedestrian crosswalks which are meant to favor the pedestrian. however, i feel like it just serves to confuse people (especially out of towners) who are not used to stopping when a pedestrian is at a crosswalk. and these things don't have stop lights or anything like that... it's the driver's responsibility to stop and let the people go across. as you can imagine, there are many times when drivers do not stop. pedestrians here get lulled into a sense of safety that should not exist when 2 ton vehicles are bearing down on them at 30 mph. i wish they would just remove these stupid things. they do more harm than good (and i walk around here quite a bit)

anyways, long story short... it was a pedestrian crosswalk accident, and i stopped just before getting completely smashed by a car. it did catch my front tire though, i took a good spill, and i have been without a bike for some time now (though the driver was very apologetic and promised to get me a new bike... i just have to get around to choosing/fixing it up now.)

thank you for the advise again.... you are completely right... i never realized how loud music was through this headphone compare to the older one (b & o ear plug thing-which i can hear the noise from the outside versus this closed headphones)... i think sound is getting better... (i am going to "break it in" before this saturday?) i think i can... i think i can..

p.s. messengers in manhattan are out of control, one ran over my roommate once and when she woke up, police had to escort her to the hospital.... and another time, bike messenger was passing by her yelling, "eat something, b*tch!" (she's really skinny and she was so happy that he said that-i guess he thought that was an insult... ha! jokes on him!)

LobsterSan, sorry about your accident. where you wearing headphones at the time?

here in Phoenix people wait for the crosswalk light even if there's no cars coming. drove my brother crazy - he's a nyc jaywalker.

god help you if you cut off a pedestrian in Colorado Springs! i did (ex-nyc driver). that guy shook his fist like he was calling fire and brimstone to come down and consume me. it was the last time i ever cut off a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

and people here are used to jaywalkers if they're in a university town (Tempe, Tucson, etc) or a college neighborhood. you never know if they're high, so it's best not to take a chance. i actually had a guy thank me after he crossed the street and it was my light, and a girl thanked me for stopping in the middle of the road as she crossed. luckily my flasher button is readily accessible on my miata.

yeah, all bike paths should be elevated.

but i've seen many bikers get hit - but then here in phoenix (because we get drivers from all 50 states) you learn to wait 3 seconds after the light changes because so many people take yelows AND reds! and as you drive down the street you look at the cross walk light - it'll flash 13 times before changing.

I live in a city where whinning is way of life, and pedestrians don't know how to cross the street. Because they have the right way, they think all is well with the world. Wrong, dumb ****es. Even if you have the right away, you should still be alert and look out for dumba** drivers.

You guys should see my town.. It's terrible, the pedestrians are out of hand. The the dumb craps see a green light and they think it means them! It's a darn good thing I drive a standard so that I can rev the engine with the clutch down. Seems to work pretty well even though my car is small and unintimidating. If I hit someone they would probably do more dammage to the car then it did to them anyway...
