A thought just came up to my mind: don't sharing earbuds or clip-on type headphones have a high chance for development of hearing damage?

When you share earbuds, the volume will be reduced by half because you only have one 'bud on. Thus, one would naturally turn up the volume to normal listening levels as if he/she was wearing two earbuds. Won't this have a high chance to damage the ear because that one ear is receiving twice as much sound (all sound concentrated on one ear)?

Yeah, the potential exists because, as you noted, it's normal to turn the volume way up when you only have one ear in on the action. But you're not likely (are you?) to listen for extended periods in that setup, so it's probably not really an issue. ...
