Heard the HD-595 for the first time today.

That was my comparitive impression. Slightly grainier highs, also a little less bass quantity, a little less "refined" but still very good. And easier to drive. I was just surprised, because it's never been a headphone I'd thought that seriously about from reading about it on head-fi, but after trying it, I'm thinking about getting a pair.

I think the slight grain and their nice impact makes them so good for rock and metal. HD 650, DT 880 etc. are just too polite for this task.

I don't think the 595/580 is exactly chalk and cheese, but I do believe the 580s are a more relaxed can overall, and much better built. Did Sony make the 595s?

Sound wise I think I prefer the 595s slightly.

True. I've long had both, and I can safely say that people here have exaggerated this "laidback vs. forward" thing, probably echoing Headroom? They're much more alike than different.

I don't think they are very different. I bought the HD 595 because I liked the 555 but when I had both i thought they were pretty similar.

A joke!

Just commenting on the fact the 595s do feel a bit fragile compared to the 580s, which might survive a bomb-blast!

Sony are not exactly well-known for their high build-quality...but they'll copy ideas in a flash!

I consider both the HD 595 and HD 650 to be reasonably fast though the bass on the 650 sounds a bit slower giving the impression of muddiness I suppose.

The HD 650 can sound forward depending on the record.
