Welcome to Head-fi! Sorry about your [already small] wallet

The V6 (buy @ amazon), SRH240 (buy @ headroom), D1001S, and the SR60i (buy @ headroom).

the D1001S can be bought at Headroom for $90, a STEAL. Trusted site; get them if it meets your needs.

A lot of people here keep singing the praises of the SHR440, I'd give them a try if I was on a budget looking for a closed design. Otherwise I'll give the answer the Grado fanatics (like myself) will give you:

SR80 (or SR60) or look into the Alessandro MSi, they supposedly use the SR125 drivers (which I'm a big fan of).

D10001S is a good way for you to go. Headroom has good sales occasionally but I find Amazon to be the absolute cheapest place for headphones.

+1 if you want closed cans, those wouldn't be a bad choice. Otherwise, get the grados - perfect for rock and metal.

does it work well for metal/hard rock and some soft rock?

I assume yes.
I have several rock CDs with me played with the Grado SR60.
Grado headphones are outstanding headphones for any type of rock music.

My Grado SR60 is with me for about a year already.
Handmade at their factory, they are of high quality.
My $69 SR60 served me for more than $10, 000 music for my ears I think.

I would say go for open if sound leaking in/out is not going to be a problem (in a library, noisy apartment, etc.)
