Headroom Maxed Out Home Review

Thanks KR.

I'm not a student anymore, but know the feeling about the money for a new amp.

Semi-Retired really cuts deeply into "Disposable Income". Right now I'm putting $1K+ into my boat, still a lot cheaper than a new one, so that kills my spending money for awhile.

Really looking forward to being able to review the Little and compare it to the only other amp I've ever heard. See my review starting probably Wednesday.

Old Pa, I don't know who s**t on you, but you are about the most cynical, mean spirited, down beat, close minded individual I've ever had the pleasure of not meeting.

That's why they make you give them a credit card number before they ship the amp to you

. So if you do decide to keep it, you just bought yourself a new amp!

RE the post count thing... I realy dont see how anyone can bitch, the fact that the loaner program even exists is just A++++++ in favor of headroom.

Of course, it's just called bitter jealousy. I am certain that if these people could be part of this program that they would. Pretty immature if you ask me.

Without some type of qualification they would have about 2000 requests for a loaner. Which would require a lottery type selection system. Which, I’m sure, would generate some very pleasant postings. Basically, the selection requirements are irreverent since you will never be able to please everyone. The number of postings is as good as any qualification criteria.

You really don't think it makes good business sense to give the biggest loudmouths dibs on the loaners? Hard to get publicity out of the quiet ones.

Question:

You've given us some rather good points about the MoH, however - what are the lows? (in your opinion)? Weaknesses? Some things you've noticed?

The only low would be the crossfeed. When comparing the Headroom's to Jan’s version, it was clear to me that Headroom’s version was much better as it didn’t muddy the sound as much. However, it still effected the sound in a bad way, and in some good ways as well. Crossfeed is made for old early stereo recordings, which sound down right odd on headphones, like my Albert King Blues CD, this CD is the only CD that sounded much better with crossfeed. Crossfeed was also meant for people who listen to mostly speakers and are not used to the very different headphone sound. But, while it does make headphones sound more like speakers (in truth, it still doesn’t really sound like speakers) and it also makes for a less fatiguing presentation, it does effect the highs and lows in a negative matter, however. Headroom tried to fix this problem with the brightness switches, but results will vary depending on the CD you use. For the most part, if you want to hear the best uncompromising sound, then I would suggest to leave the brightness and crossfeed off for all modern recordings.

There is one item that I believe needs to be said about this amp, and this is significant to all the HP-1000 owners here at head-fi : The HP-2 really sounds extraordinary with the MOH! The bass goes deeper than I ever thought that the bass of the HP-2 could go, and this is with the bowl pads! I am talking impact, yet just as fast and detailed as before, but with more impact and much deeper! Also the highs are even more extended than before, but still without ever being bright. The soundstage also got much larger. It was a true eye opener, I must confess. Before, I really thought that the HP-2 were better than the HD600 with the stock cable, once I upgraded the stock with the Reds, I felt that they were now just as good as the HP-2, just different. But, now the HP-2 has surpassed the HD600 even with the red cable thanks to the MOH. I would strongly suggest that anyone looking the ultimate amp for the HP-1000’s to look at Headroom’s amps starting with the MOH and above.

Huh?

I live in Denmark and I was allowed to be part of the "program"... I would have too, if it didn't require me to pay 2x$50 for shipping
