Headphones with built in amp

Wireless headphones, ones with built in MP3 players and that Audio-Technica model with the TOSLINK input and the built in DAC.

Elsewise the closest would be in cup transformers, like on the ESP6.

The only ones I know of are the Sennheiser RS wireless series. The have built in 86.4 Mhz reciever, amp, and rechargeable battery, The SQ is respectable but the bass is lacking simply because an amp big enough to drive the bass any better would suck the LI battery dry in a heartbeat.

The noise cancelling ATH ANC7 do not technically have a built in amp, as the amp they have is for the purpose of generating the noise cancelling sounds. However, it also boosts the signal and effectively makes the phones sound amped when they are turned on. I treat them as if they have a built in amp and as portable phones I am very happy with the sound.

Didn't AT make a headphone with a built in DAC and amplifier?

I have to ask: Why?

In what situation would you have a source and have headphones, but not be able to have even the lowly E3 or E5 amp?

Convenience?
