Is there another portable amp that I could use as I cant afford the E18 at the moment. 

If you want a portable DAC/AMP, the Fiio E07K should work and save £50 over the E18. Down the road, you can add the desktop based E09K amp/docking station for additional power for the 300-600 ohm headphones that you'll eventually be buying.

For a short term, inexpensive solution you could get the Topping NX1 for £28.99...just an amp (no DAC) though.
