I need a well built product that is not ugly and good for portable usage.

I mostly listen to rock and metal music. I want nice vocals and guitars and drums to be nice.

In that price category I have yet to find something which comes even close to the AKG k420. To me they are very comfortable (no more k24p headaches and no AKG induced balding).
They aren't that isolating though so not the best cans for public transport (depending on the volume of your surroundings).

AKG K240 is hardly portable (but I would wear them outdoors

If you want to really go portable, how about PortaPros?  They sound good with rock.

Superlux !

I have the HD661 portable...which goes for $48 and sounds like a $100 in my opinion.

Do check out the reviews.

Cheerz!
