Headphones under $150 that will compete with top end headphones?

No such thing. It's a pipe dream and the DT48 doesn't even come close to the top headphones. I wish I could tell you otherwise but it's the cold truth in my experience.

Hmmmm.... The only thing that comes to mind immediately is the MS1. Also, ATH M50, AKG K240, AKG K271, HD25-1 II

None of those come close to top-end headphones, though. Hell, not even the HF2s come close to JH13s.

Parts don't generally cost a lot, but R&D costs a ton.

yeah, you should totally go DIY some top end headphones in your garage.

Of course they don't. I tried the best I could.

That said, I do prefer the sound of the MS1s to some headphones that cost ~$500, but thats taste. But that's important as well.

what do you mean by top end? If you mean stuff like Stax, orpheus, R10, HD800, T1, then nothing in that price range comes close. If you mean like K701, HD600, RS1, etc, that's a different ball game.

Depends on the can, I would suspect woodies cost a fair bit more, as do headphoens with intricately designed parts.

You have to consider advertising, R&D costs, as well as a whole bunch of other factors in the final price. I'll tell you this though, they certainly cost a whole lot more to manufacture than the headphones under $150.

And to answer your original question, there is not a single headphone under $150 that will compete with any headphone over $300, even over $250. The DT48s are neutral, but they do not come anywhere near better headphones, and also the best DT48s which are the original manufacture version are the only ones that might be better than other headphones up to $500, and the original run version costs a lot more than $150.

First you want headphones that sound like speakers under $150 now you want ones that compete with high end headphones under $150? Here's some food for thought, if headphones like that existed why would ANYBODY buy a high end headphone, ever? Either up your budget or enjoy what you can afford man.

Interesting. What if the price was below $300. Would it be possible?

Stax Lambda (normal bias) with SRD6. You'd need a speaker amp though.

...

I think the general consensus of this forum disagrees with you. Glad to have your opinion, but I think you'll find a lot of disagreement with that.

I wonder how much those [insert expensive product here] cost to make? [insert value far lower than market price] at the most?
