Thanks - comfort is a huge issue for me. I want to be able to keep a pair on for at least 3-5 hours at a time, and I've found with supra-aural headphones my ear feels like it's been beaten with a stick after only 90 minutes.

Thanks but both of those are a bit too much $$$ for me, since I also need to buy a new soundcard.

As a dutch guy i would recommend the philips HP1000

(around 150).
But it depends on were you are living becouse they are very hard to get in the usa, otherwise i would go for the audio technica 500, of perhaps the sennheiser 555.

*shrug* They were comfy on my ears. Of course your ears tend to heat up because no air gets in to keep them cool, but that's the nature of closed headphones.

I have a burning question - which of the Sennheiser's I listed earlier suffer from a lack of an AMP.......I'm starting to salivate over the 580 but I've read at least 2 comments that you need an amp for them

The comfort of the HFI700 is just fine, though not exceptional. I have no problem wearing them several hours per day.

It's indepandance and efficiency, but the impedance ohms is a pretty good indicator if you need an amp. It's essential for the HD580s for instance.

HD-515 (555 is a step up)
HD-555 (part of new 515/555/595 line)
HD-570 (590 is a step up)
HD-580 (needs amp)
HD-590 (replaced by 595)

Haven't heard the 555, nor seen a comparision against the 590, but these two would be the leaders out of the above. Again haven't heard them all, but HD555, HD590, CD780, or A500 would all likely be good choices. Also look for a used set of the Sony F1s (also open). They are suppose to be one of the most comfortable phones out there.

Thanks for the reply

So much for the 580, and so much spilled drool!

Is it just that a computer can't push the same power? Surely they must be more powerful than a portable CD player/iPod/whatever

Comments re: 555 vs 590?

I know a Chaintech 710 can drive the 580s, because it can easily drive K240Ms, which have twice as much power impedance.
I would definitely get them over the 590s.
However, 555 vs 580 is a different story...
I think others would be able to shed more light, I haven't tried 555s.

So do you guys think I shouldn't even bother with a really good pair unless I have an amp? That I won't notice the difference, etc

If so I'm leaning towards the HD-555s + Chaintech 710

I don't know how the Chaintech performs with games tho...

I have a pair of HD-600's (which are almost identical to the HD-580's) and I found that they ran well off the soundcard as long as you didnt turn it up really loud. It will really depend on the soundcard though, my brother's onboard ac97 sound is terrible for driving just about any headphones.

HD580 is too clamping and a bit tight for me, not very comfortable for me. but maybe its just because i have big head.
so if you have big head, its one thing you have to put in mind.

why dont you get ATH-AD5 ? i think i recommended this headphones a few times already, but nobody seemed to take it seriously.

it is really really really comfortable, i can guarantee that to you.
im not trying to self-advocate my phone, but just wanna let people here know that this is one overlooked phone, especially in comfort department.
