Hi,

I'm looking for a pair of headphones for all sorts of electric music (house, trance,DnB,dubstep etc).
I've been looking at the Ultrasone Pro900's which are about $300 on amazon at the moment but I would rather spend a bit less if the Pro900's aren't that much of an improvement.

I'm considering...

Ultrasone HFI 580 & 780

Pro 900

ATH M50

Beyer DT990/600 & DT770/80

...more suggestions welcome.

I know some of these headphones are considered to be on another level to the others but I'm looking for the one that would give me the best bang for buck.

I'll most likely be using an amp like the Fiio E9 and a Dac like the Asus Xonar DG (until I get a Xonar STX).

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

The best bang for the buck is the Pansonic RP-HTF600.  It's less than $30 and sounds as good or better than many headphones that cost several times more.  If you want to go up a bit higher, consider mid-level Ultrasones like the HFI-580/DJ1 and HFI-780.  The 580 in particular at $119 on Amazon is a real steal.  The 770 and 990 Beyers are good options, as are the Denons such as the D1100 and D2000.

I personally use the Pro 900 myself for this kind of music, and consider it worth every penny, but you do run into diminishing returns the higher up the ladder you go.

I use my Ultrasone Pro 900 with Fiio E11 amp and the sound is out of this world! Especially when playing EDM and rock music.

They're a good headphone but more on this side of neutral than anything. If you're only looking for an EDM can around that price I'd suggest the AIAIAI TMA-1 or Phiaton MS400.

The suggested Pro 900 is probably the king (around here), but I do question...what kind of bass do you like? Subwoofer (rumble)? Hard Hitting?

How do the Senn HD 25 1 ii stack up for EDM?

I suppose that's a better way to put it. The bass is good on the HD25, but for an EDM exclusive headphone it's not my first choice in that price range.

Don't know, I guess that experience can differ because senns are very balanced but far from neutral and were very fun for me.

I'm also in the same boat, with same music preference: was really considering the pro 900...until half an hour ago....now they went from 305 to 479 :frowning2:

Now the best option, and a decent one too, is the DT990 (most probably 600 ohm). If the pro 900 come down again, they'll deff be up there. The DT900 from amazon are currently $284.

OK well pro900 is out of the question.

What is the difference between the DT990 600ohm an 250ohm?

Well besides the impedance, there are some differences: http://www.head-fi.org/t/513393/guide-sonic-differences-between-dt770-dt990-models-more

I auditioned some headphones yesterday ( HFI 580,780, DT880/250, ATH M50 and a few more) and I was quite surprised at how well the DT880 handled my type of music. I've heard on the forums that it lacks some bass but I thought it was quite good being driven from a Fiio E9.

I'll probably end up buying more than 1 set but I'm trying to decide between the HFI 580 and 780 for the time being.

Can someone outline some differences between these headphones that you have heard? I'm not sure which one to choose. ( I will drive out of the E9)

I thought the 580 had slightly more bass and the 780 brighter highs - the guy at the shop said the 780 was a better headphone because of more detail but i'm not sure if I heard it.

Cheers

i really want a pair of pro 900s now after hearing the bass on them is even better.

I own the 780 (and also the Pro 900) and have read a great deal about the 580.  The consensus seems to be that the 580 has a lot more punch in the mid-bass region, while the 780 is slightly deeper and a bit more detailed in the bass region.  Mids are supposed to be fairly similar, though the 580 may be a tad muddier due to mid-bass bleed.  The 780 should have brighter treble (some even find it piercing, though I myself don't, although it does become a tad tamer after burn-in) and more overall detail, clarity, and slightly larger soundstage.  They should be nearly identical in feel and comfort, but the coloring is a little different with the 580 having a greater percentage of black on the cups.  The main difference people seem to notice is the much larger mid-bass hump on the 580s, which people seem to really like for bassy genres, and is probably the main reason they are more popular other than the generally lower price.  People coming from from headphones like the Beats probably wouldn't be satisfied with the bass of the 780s, but if you were fine with the more bass-neutral DT-880s you might be fine with the bass on the 780s, which are still boosted, but not as much as the 580s.  I also find the Pro 900s a large improvement over the 780s in pretty much every category, but they're also twice as much.  I've also run both the 780s and the Pro 900s through the E9, and they do improve noticeably, moreso the Pro 900 than the 780, which is a little easier to drive.

Also, FWIW, I find the Headroom graphs on the HFIs to be spectacularly unhelpful and just plain wrong.
