I would like your advice on getting good headphones for bass? I am looking at the Sony MDR-1A currently, but i am not really experienced in audio stuff to judge if this is a headphone that will give me the best bass?

deep/smooth can be described as many ways, depending on the person you ask.

Let me ask you few questions;
are you looking for sound isolation? are you looking for portability (for traveling) or just home use? are you going to directly use this headphone with your pc/portable device without an amp?

I'm going to use it both for home and when i'm outside listening to my mp3 player. To clarify the reason why i chose the headphones in my original post: i was told that the lower the hertz, the better the bass. The Sony MDR-1AB has a range of 3hz - 100khz.

that hertz specification is just a marketing spec rather than a real measurement in my experience. since you are planning to use this outside, more portable friendly headphone might suit you well.

1A looks great but I haven't heard it. anyway since it's the successor for 1R you can't go much wrong with it.  also look in to options like M50x. if you are ok with more balanced sound signature, go with SoundMagic HP150

What about earbuds? Are there any earbuds that provide nice smooth and deep bass?

If you can sacrifice some bass quantity for overall quantity, theres the ttpod t1e, rha ma750, dunu dn1000, and yamaha eph100 (these are still fun and bassy but most would agree that these are not basshead iems)

Those are in-ear canal earbuds. Are there any classic earbuds that don't go into the ear canal? I have bad ear canals, the ones that go in never stay in and fall off.
