I am looking at either the AKG 701 or the Monster Beats.

I listen to ambient(Dubtribe Sound System,), drum and bass(Au Techre, Aphex Twin), techno(The Orb) ,rock, blues, classical and jazz

One of the Head.fi sponsors " Headroom"has a review of the 701's and they feel that they lack bass.
I recommend the following for good bass but with respectable mids and highs

Amped: Beyerdynamic DT 700's (not pro) DT990's (not pro)

Unamped: Denon AHD2000 or 5000's

OK, what sound card or other equipment will you be plugging these headphones into?

And, about how much are you looking to spend?

It is for my ipod and possibly computer. My sound card is onboard chip !
I have an HR Total Airhead.

they sound expessially good with electronic based music. can be had on ebay for $110.

"About the only thing that we can possibly say bad about these headphones is that those who like a very laid-back, mellow-sounding, or heavy bass presentation might want to look elsewhere since these are certainly highly refined, audiophile-oriented headphones that deliver a deeply expansive soundstage image along with a textural detail and a liquid immediacy that demands your attention."

I just bought some 702's on ebay for 269.00 shipped so I hope my "Airhead" or "Grado RA-1" will do. I have ordered a Head-Direct EF-1 hybrid tube/ss for only 299.00 (on sale now) but I'll have to wait for that.

Are the K701 and Beats the only two options? For your music preferences, the D2000 or HD650 is probably better than either of those.

I love the 701 but 90% of my listening is acoustic. It requires a good amp, the total bithead won't cut it.

You can get the DT 770-80 for $100 used on ebay - Beyerdynamic is selling them. They are great and offer a lot of bass. It does help to have an amp than can control the bass though - but straight out of my iPod they sound fine whereas the 701 sounds like cr*p. The 701 needs a pretty good amp to get going.

FWIR, the 702's have a slightly better sound, however minute, have the detachable cable, are more comfortable and look a hell of a lot better in black than in white.

Whoa-ho-ho-ho. You need to do a LOT of research. Search around here for both of those headphones and read some associated threads.

Basically you just said "I'm hungry... should I go have a steak dinner or microwave a hot pocket?"

Frankly, I'd say that you might want an HD600 or maybe a Denon (from what I hear).
