I know that some headphone companies have a distinct "sound" that's passed down their product line. Now I have tried Sennheisers and Grados before and I know that they have a very distinct sound signature. However I don't know diddly squat about other headphone brands like Beyer, AKG, Shure, etc., etc.

Can someone help me with this?

Run a search for "house sound", this was discussed not too long ago. BTW, you wouldn't find much in common between a HD202 and HD650...

...except that both are darker than Grados (which are about as bright as it gets nowadays, with the possible exception of the Sony SAx000s), and Beyers and AKGs are somewhere in between (and not even consistently so). You can also see that the HD25 is closer to AKGs:
