I've been reading other articles, and I have found one. The Koss ProDJ100 apparently needs an amp to sound awesome, and some even say better than the ATH M50. At $80 it is a sub $100 can, and it can be found for ~$50 on Amazon. Just putting it out there :)

I stand corrected. Thanks for the info

I was impressed by DJ100 (reviews here and there). Now, now, do you think a neophyte like me should use one?

EDIT: Does DJ100+Amp sound better than Grado?

Just a note about the Sennheiser HD-280... They are EXTREMELY uncomfortable. No words describe the amount of pressure the clamp gives you. Also, if you are not a fan of coiled cables then you don't want to get it. The problem I see in coiled cables are that they add extra weight to whichever earcup the cable is attached to.

I'm surprised no one has recommended the Audio Technica ATH-M50 and this is Head-Fi!

On Amazon.com The ATH-M50s are selling for $113.09. Spend 13.09 over your budget and be happier. Just note that pleather earpads can get hot and make you feel sweaty. The straight cable version also has a very long cable...10 feet if I remember correctly.

I am sorry but I cannot surely say. I have yet to own one (hoping to get it soon), but I have just been doing some research. Check out the following links for more info :)

:) Its funny that I saw your post on this thread right after reading how amp dependent the ProDj100s were on tdockweiler's thread.

Ahh... I think I can wait a few more months :p

But, this phone requires an amp? The first reviewer was saying so.

Ahh... I did stumble upon this page, but I did not try to change colors.

They seem to be pretty stylish and comfy.. What about the overall sound?

Jude and Tyll (two of the main contributors on the site) were very impressed by them at CES2012, going as far as to call it one of the best deals under $100.

Also People, should I buy phones which fit my ears or phones which sit on my ears? I have a feeling the former would be better.

It all depends on what you want.  IEMs (inner-ear monitors; aka earbuds), provide some of the best isolation and bang-for-the-buck, but I personally have major comfort issues with sticking something that far into my ear.  You really have to try them to find out.

If you're talking about supra-aural vs circumaural, I personally found supra-aural to be more comfortable (my ears get hot very easily with circumaurals).  But again, YMMV.

I take back my recommendation. Didn't realize you will be using this ideally for your iPod Nano. I'm assuming you'd want to use it on-the-go? The ATH-M50 is not ideal for that. Even so, you would be using it with the laptop, which I'm assuming has on-board sound. On-board sound will not produce good enough sound to pair with the ATH-M50's.

I would recommend them to you if (1) You have a sound card (2) You don't need them on-the-go

And no they don't need an amp. They might benefit some-what from them, but they are very good without an amp.

Also, make sure to check out Head-Fi's Summer Buying Guide:

Yes, I was talking about the latter. I forgot to think about the heat at all! I was only thinking about them being snug-fit. Thanks again.

I would wait and get the HD 25. For portability, comfort, durability, all around balanced and quality sound. You could really use those as a portable (perfect for noisy environs/DJing as well) and general-purpose listening headphone for a long time.
