Just reading through a couple of threads and found the above analogy - an phrase which I have used many a time. However, though I understand the meaning, I did not understand why I would use it until this epiphenomenal moment: in boxing there are weight categories. I would not have thought about this, but yesterday, I happened upon a Youtube video of Bully Beatdown, a show I never knew existed.
Well, anyway, a cheap headphone which 'punches above its weight' actually means that it is fighting in a league which should outclass or outperform it entirely. Like me versus Lenox Lewis.
I am 69kg and he must be over 100, plus he has a reach that could stall traffic on the Trans-Canada highway.
Anyway, great moment of realisation for me! Do I hear a hoorah!?
