My guitar amp doesn't have a headphone jack but does have a preamp out.  With the proper cable (1/4" to RCA) can I plug the preamp out to my CTH headphone amp?  This would give me a sweet headphone jack for my late night guitar noodling!

It's not the same.

You're better off buying a Line6 portable, or something like the Korg Pandora. They are direct boxes with cabinet simulations and multi effects, the size of an Ipod and battery powered.

I've never been a fan of Line 6 products.  Their effects don't sound realistic to me.  I did look at the Pandora Mini but that's $100 and I'm not sure about the sound quality either.  If I was going to spend more money I'd probably buy an Apogee Jam and play through my iPad and Garageband.

I also contacted the original builder of my amp and he said to give it a try.  Just start with the volume off and turn it up slowly.
