I was wondering if it were possible to do damage to my headphones if I hooked them up to my 100 watt receiver and put the volume up too high? I'm guessing it's not a good thing, but how can I know if I have in fact done damage to them?

I was listening to music through my loudspeakers and I realized that my HD555s were still pulgged into the headphone jack of my receiver...I had the volume pretty loud and I'm hoping I didn't cause damage.

I wouldn't worry.....headphones can take quite loud levels. The headphone out in your reciever is getting a different wattage then your speakers.....so it's not like the max output on your speakers is the same as the headphone jack.

What a relief! Thanks DavesRose - now I can sleep tonight.

You are fine. Headphones are fairly simply -- either the driver works or it is broken. If you blow one out, you will hear it. If it sounds fine, then it is fine.
