Hi all,

Would appreciate some advice.  Currently I use HE-400 for rap + jazz, HD600 for most other music.  When I need closed headphones, I use DT770 and Oppo PM-3.

I love the HD600 most of all but sometimes find myself wanting slightly better bass extension, slightly less mid-bass boom, and slightly less polite highs.  Would the HE-560 be a good choice as an upgrade?  Also considering HD800 S and open to suggestions.  Budget is $1500.

Thanks!

what you described is pretty much exactly how I would describe the HE560 in comparison to the HD600, so yes, I think it will be what you're after.

What about Hifiman Edition X?

I wouldn't call HE-560 having less polite highs compared to HD600, differences are noticeable especially with the focus pads enough to make it possibly sibilant and harsh for some recordings. Matching is picky too. If you want neutral, quality bass&treble, and nice extensions for both, go for it. It is a good allrounder headphones just like the T1. If you find the 560 too harsh, 400i might suit you better.

It's a bit over my $1500 limit, and one of the reviews I read complained about build quality.  If I'm spending over $1000 on headphones, I want build quality to be exemplary.

Amping is important for both btw...hybrid tube or SS for 560, I've heard OTL tube amps make high impedance cans like HD800 bliss.

I'm using a Schiit Asgard 2 (solid state) with no plans to upgrade that at this time.

I think you can't go wrong with HE560, you could also read about the Ether, although HE560 price is very convenient.

If you've got asgard 2, you can't go wrong with HE-560. I think it will be the one you are looking for. Omni is another great choice, but depending on your taste you might find it treble/air lacking and having closed sound due to 560 being more open. If you know you love treble, air and that openess along with imaging go for 560.
If not, I think omni will be an excellent choice.

If you want closed, a lot of people seem to be loving the Mr. Speakers Ether-C. Link is here:

15-day return policy, too.

Thanks, all.  Some of the HE-560 reviews describe the mids as "dry" or slightly recessed.  I love the mids from my HD600 and don't want to lose those with the next HPs.

Depending on your preference and amp matching, it can sound dry. However, although it lacks body compared to HD600, it is by no means dry. It is a pair known for its openess and 'fast', if you absolutely love warm, natural, organic sound 400i or 500 will suit you better. 560 is more tuned towards he-6
I personally think 560 will impress you because hd600 is by no means warm, just sounds natural. 560 has more air, openness, and better extension on both sides. Imaging is good too, but leaks more sound than 600. Also, you already have the asgard 2 which matches with the 560 well.

Greetings, I m also looking for an upgrade to the HD600 and I also have the Asgard 2. I recently tried the he-400s and the 560 too. The sound of both the hifiman's cans was quite dry and maybe to cold comparing to the sennheisers. I was also considering MrSpeakers Alpha Dogs but i cant find them to try.
