Whatsup guys,

I need the input of some of you who have more experience with open cans than I. I've pretty much exclusively used closed back cans, and due to a change in my work situation, I can only listen to headphones that are open back. I've also never delved inside the world of higher-mid-range headphones. Right now, I feel like my options are to get some HD650s, or the HE-300 & EF3 combo, orrr  the HE-400 and another amp? If you guys could help me make a choice between these, I would greatly appreciate. Any additional suggestions are more than welcome.

Musical interests:
- Hip Hop (the old stuff)
- Alternative rock
- Electronic
- Bluegrass
- Jazz
- Metal

(I have a huge variety of music)

Thanks everyone

HE-400s have a dip in the midrange which is great for hip hop and electronic but you might be lacking when it comes to jazz.

The HD650 sounds like the better all-rounder but think again if you like a bright presentation.

Great information, I wish there were more reviews on the HE-300 though, especially considering the combo deal they have right now.

Someone mentioned  the HE-400s can be a bit fatiguing due to the planar magnetic drivers, on top of the weight of the cans themselves. Do you have any personal experiences?

I found out HE400s bright for first 10-20 hours. Then after (brain) burn in I noticed that treble spike has smoothed alot, sound has become much more darker. They are still very detailed and I dont experience any fatigue from highs. They are heavy but I got used to it very fast.

Thanks for the response. Any experience with the HE-300?

I can echo Sasasd, no trouble with fatigue at all. The weight hasn't been an issue for me either. I've not tried the HE-300 I'm afraid.

Steve, have you seen the EF-3 amp? I'm very close to just purchasing the HE-300 and EF-3 combo, I feel like you can't beat $250 for these headphones and a solid amp

Just save up the money for the HD650. I don't know about he HE-300, but the HE-400 left me cold, and this thread suggests that a $20 Koss after some modding sounds better than the HE-300.

Haha, whenever I heard "KSC-75s sound better than ____" I just think ehh, whatever. Maybe to their ears they sound superior, but I've had zero interest in owning a pair of KSC-75s. I've heard the porta pro as well, and don't think they're all they're cracked up to be. I also hear there's quite a difference between the HE-400 and HE-300. At this point, for me, it's between the HD650s or the HE-300 / EF-3 combo ($400 vs $250)
