Hi guys,

I have asked this in another thread already but I really wanted to see if I could get anyone's help regarding this battle that I'm having in my head.

I currently have a Pico DAC -> Gilmore Lite setup and it is excellent!

I am trying to keep just 2 headphones in my stable as financially I don't believe I can have more than that at this point. Additionally, just having less headphones makes things more convenient.

My 2nd headphone will be the HF-2 as I have already ordered it and I am intending to keep them for a while at least (I am a Grado fan).

I listen to pretty much all music except country and death metal and so I am looking for an ALL AROUND headphone that can suit my needs. It has become a fight between the HD650 (recabled with Silver Dragon) and the Denon AH-D7000 stock. If I sell the hd650 I can probably get the 7000 for about 75 dollars more.

I currently own the HD650 and used to own the AH-D2000 which I hear are remarkably similar to the D7000. I adored the D2000 but I felt the midrange was just too recessed and I wasn't all that sure about the whole "closed" feeling. I am only thinking of getting rid of my hd650 because I owned a gs1000 briefly (which i needed to sell for financial reasons) which I REALLLLY enjoyed- one of my favorite (apart from the hd800 and o2).

What was your choice?

I think the HF-2's will be more similar to the HD650 (than D7000) except brighter, more involving and faster. I actually really really liked the HF-2's when I tried them at the North NJ meet. However, compared to the HD800's and D7000's these were in another league in terms of technical superiority. Still, I was really impressed with the HF-2's and found them to be very fun and good. If you liked the GS1000's which I also really liked, I think you'll love the HF-2's. The HF-2's are brighter and more basslight than the GS1000's but sort of similar and even more fun with crystal clear highs (w/o being sibilant).

Sorry for the short rant but basically I would try to have 2 different sounding headphones but both very good so I would get the D7000's + HF-2's since the HD650's will sound more similar to the HF-2's than the D7k would. However, I dont think the HD650's I heard were recabled, but they were the more balanced sounding version.

I'm going to have to agree with Chronos about having two different sounding phones since that is the same train of thought that I had when I got my setup. I currently have the HF-2s and the D2000s and had the SR225s and I feel that having a closed set and an open set gives me two completely different listening experiences.

I do know that the denons, senns, and grados all sound drastically different IMO.

I guess it is possible that I enjoy the denons and senns more than the grado too haha.

I currently own the HD650 (balanced), AH-D7000 (SE), GS1000i (SE), and have had the HF-2 for two weeks.

I love the D7000. The presentation of detail, harmonic richness, and incredible wearing comfort make them close to my ideal headphone. The HD650 is a very good headphone and my opinion is colored by the fact that I'm still trying to make them comfortable (the grip too tightly on my head). The HD650 and D7000 are very different headphones in many ways, but I think they both get the harmonic/timbre part of the music correct.

If I had to keep only one it would be very easy - D7000. For what it's worth...

I own both, the HD650 and D7000. The HD650 is re-cabled with RAL balanced cable and the D7000 are re-terminated to balanced.

Previously I owned the D5000 and I currenlty own a pair of D2000 with most of the Markl mods, wood cups and recabled balanced with APS V2. The D7000 is superior in sound to the D5000 and the moded D2000.

The HD650 sounds great and very open but still lack of bass impact due to it open construction. My current favorite headphones from my collection are the D7000 so far. My Edition 9 are it thier way to Alex to be racabled and balanced with APS V3... will see waht happens after that.

I've owned both and the D7000 is in a higher class than the 650's.

Then again, is this worth noting: I liked the hd650 more than the d2000 (which i also liked alot though).

Is the difference between the 2k and 7k large?

I went from the D5000 to the D7000 and felt the difference was noticeable and worth the extra cost, so maybe you can interpret that to the D2000. I had the 650 and really liked them, but ended up with the Denon's as they are just more fun but still refined.

It's very tough to compare open and closed headphone as their sound is very different. With my music preference, which is Vocal jazz, acoustic, I'd prefer the HD650, but I guess since you mentioned wide variety of music, I think D7000 will be more suitable, it has more bass and some isolation.

well it is a hands up between the hd650 and d7000, though I believe the d7000 is in another level, my idea if HF-2, D7000 and HD800. The TRIFECTA for me is 1 grado, 1 open can, 1 bass monster closed can. so it is more about what you listen to myk if you want to cut down from 3 to 2.
