I have neither headphone, but I'm torn as to which to get.

I have DT880s, and I've heard that the AKG 701 is similar in sound (though possibly better in some ways); I like the DT880, so the AKGs are promising for $280.

For $315, I can acquire Senn HD650s - a headphone that seems to attract a lot of love and some dislike. The idea of a full, rich sound really interests me, but I've not yet heard these phones.

I'll be listening to a wide variety of music, punk to classical. I know we're comparing apples and oranges, but I'd like your subjective comparison of these two phones.

Thanks!

Sounds like you are a candidate for 650's. The K701's overlap the sound signature of the 880's more than the 650's. The 650's would be more complementary

It didn't work for me. Whenever I listened to hd600, I missed dt880 clarity and hated rich 600 bass. When I listened to dt880, I missed hd600 richness and hated lean 880 bass

.

But I understand that they can be complementary for many other folks around here. Can we somehow define the complement rules? Similar to artists' rules for complementary colours? I guess upstream equipment complicates the issue as well

That's how I use the word.

To me, the K701 is a better DT880, so it's not complementary at all.
