I would have gone to Dynamic Audio's accessory shop in Akihabara where he could have listened to Grado and Stax in addition to the other aforementioned phones. Better yet, gone to Fujiya Avic, which has far better prices.

His prime reason of buying the 650 is: because 650 is "the reference" can. So sound quality, I think, was an secondary consideration.
Btw, he has quite a nice lineup of cans,,,
portapro,ER-4s,SRS-2020,ATH-A9X,ATH-W1000,rs-1
amped by the "craptacular" HA-2... Strange choice for a 2channler.
