I am of the ignorant masses. I know little to nothing of the DIY. I do have experience with stripping and capping wires for light ballasts. Is terminating a headphone cable essentially the same thing?

If by caps, you mean those twist-caps, then not really.
The idea is the same though.. you solder the wires onto the plug.
