My friend is coming from a pair of hd 598's, but he finds them a bit muffled/vieled?

He's looking for a more immersive feel, and wants clarity, soundstage, depth, immersion. Isn't too fussed about booming bass.

He has also tried the ad700x, and found them too thin sounding, and empty.

If you have any more recommendations within the 300ish price range, go ahead.

Sorry if these questions are a bit vague, but he needs some fairly quick opinions.

Seems like the old debate between (now former) flagships--now with more efficient X2 thrown in the mix.  The HD 600 is better than the HD 598.

The HD 600, DT 880, AKG Q701/K7XX each have something to offer.  The choice often comes down to sound signature preference.  See:

He might be able to improve the HD598s sound with a better headphone amplifier (tube amp?).
Do you know what he uses now (DAC & amp) with the HD598s?
