A while ago I had to buy a replacement cable for my HD600's so I decided to cut the headphone jack off of the old cable so I could see the wires. I was expecting to see 4 wires on each side since I  thought I had read that it was a 4 conductor cable or whatever they call it but when I cut off the end there was only 2 wires per side. What am I missing here? Or am I just not understanding something here? Clarification please!

2 conductors per side is the norm on that Sennheiser cable.  At the 1/4" TRS connector, the two ground wires are connected to the "sleeve" of the connector.  The L+ wire is connected to the tip of the connector, and the R+ is connected to the ring of the TRS connector.  Then, the L+ and one of the negative (ground) wires runs up to the left ear cup.  The other, the R+ and the other negative (ground) wire runs up to the right ear cup.
